Carpets are used for different reasons. You might have placed one by the foot of your bed or under your favourite chair to provide warmth and comfort or you might have a thick one beside your toddler’s bed to soften his/her jump. The most popular reason for getting a carpet is for decorative purposes. Whatever your reasons and use for the carpet, it’s important to know how to properly clean it yourself and also equally important to know when you need the professional help of a carpet cleaning service. If you choose to do it yourself, here are the steps to follow:
Step 1: Pick the right day
Carpets are heavy and will need a lot of sun to dry out completely. Choose a day that’s sunny and plan to start early so that there’s still some sun out when you are done with the cleaning process.
Step 2: Vacuum
The first real step in cleaning is to thoroughly vacuum both sides of the carpet. Start with the top and flip it over and repeat. This is important because the carpet has to be dust-free and dry before you start the next step.
Step 3: Patch Shampoo Test
Even if you’ve bought the best cleaning products, first test a small patch. Wash it using the shampoo then let it sit for a few hours.
Step 4: Wash
If there’s no damage to the colour or the fibres, then proceed to wash the entire carpet. Use a sturdy brush to get the shampoo deep into the fibres.
Step 5: Rinse
If you have a garden hose, that’ll be great. If not, even the health faucet in the bathroom will do a good job of removing all traces of dirt and shampoo.
Step 6: Dry
Squeeze and wring it out to remove as much water as possible. This will help it dry faster. Leave it out in the sun or in an airy room and let it completely dry out. This could take a while but is absolutely necessary.
Step 7: Vacuum Again
After washing and drying, the fibres will be all flattened out and pointing in different directions. Give it one last vacuum (like a final blow-dry for your freshly washed and set hair).
Cleaning a carpet can be quite a hectic process and your carpet may either look like it did on the day you brought it home, or it might look it’s seen 100 years. If you don’t want to take that gamble, it’s best to book a professional shampooing service.
